The red stag, known scientifically as Cervus elaphus, is noted for its impressive antlers, which can grow to significant sizes and are sought after by hunters for their beauty and challenge. The introduction of red stags into New Zealand was part of an effort to simulate the hunting environments found in Europe, and since their release into the wild, they have adapted remarkably well to the local environment.

In New Zealand, the red stag hunting season peaks from late February through August, with the most exciting period being the 'Roar' or rutting season, typically occurring in March and April. During this time, stags are more active and vocal, giving hunters a unique and exhilarating hunting experience.

At Glenora, hunters can find a fine selection of red stags, ranging from those with massive antlers that qualify as Big Game Gold Trophies, to others that meet the criteria for Silver and Bronze medals. Each stag brings its own unique set of challenges and rewards, catering to both seasoned hunters and those new to the sport.
